LED Lighting Specifications: What to Check Before You Buy
A practical checklist for comparing lumens, watts, color temperature, input voltage, dimming, and model compatibility.
Key takeaways
- Keep light output, power input, and color appearance separate in your comparison.
- Check the exact model and variant—not just a collection title.
- Confirm electrical, control, mounting, and environmental requirements before purchase.
A product title is a starting point, not a complete specification. Before comparing two fixtures, create one row for each exact model or SKU and record the documentation used. This keeps optional features and variant differences from being mistaken for features included with every order.
Read the lighting terms correctly
Lumens describe light output, while watts describe electrical power input. Efficacy expresses light output per watt. Color temperature, expressed in kelvin, describes color appearance; it is not a measure of light output. Color rendering concerns the appearance of illuminated objects.
Use these fields together. A high lumen figure does not, by itself, tell you where light will land, and a color-temperature choice does not establish whether a room will meet its lighting requirements.
| Specification | Question for your comparison sheet |
|---|---|
| Light output and wattage | Which output and power setting do the listed values describe? |
| Color temperature | Is it fixed or selectable, and which setting is intended for this project? |
| Input voltage | Does the documented range match the verified site supply? |
| Dimming and controls | Which control method and compatible equipment are specified? |
| Mounting | What hardware is included, and what must be ordered separately? |
| Location and temperature | Is the model documented for the actual installation conditions? |
Verify compatibility as a combination
Record both sides of a compatibility question: the fixture or driver model and the proposed control or accessory model. If a page says “dimmable” or “sensor-ready,” ask what that means for the exact SKU, what additional parts are needed, and where the compatibility information is documented. Do not treat a connector that looks similar as proof of compatibility.
For a retrofit, also identify the existing equipment that will remain. Have electrical suitability and installation requirements reviewed by a qualified installer using the manufacturer’s instructions. This checklist is for purchasing decisions, not wiring work.
Resolve variant and pack-size differences
Save the selected variant, finish, lens or cover option, and pack size alongside the SKU. If you need 24 fixtures and the selected item is a two-pack, record both “12 packs” and “24 fixtures” in the quote request. This is an illustrative quantity example, not the pack configuration of every LumvoLED product.
When a fixture offers selectable settings, agree on the intended configuration with the project team and retain that decision with the order documents. Ask for clarification if the product page and attached specification sheet appear inconsistent.
Common questions
Does a certification logo apply to every variant?
Check the exact model and supporting listing or documentation. Avoid extending a claim from one model to a different configuration.
What if a specification is missing?
Mark it as unconfirmed and request the relevant specification or compatibility information before ordering.
For a project order, attach your completed comparison sheet to your purchasing records and request a quote using exact product names and variants.
