Emergency and Exit Lighting: A Purchasing and Documentation Checklist

Exit identification and emergency path illumination are separate functions. Prepare the purchase around an approved life-safety layout and the exact equipment documentation, rather than selecting by appearance alone.

Exit identification and emergency path illumination are separate functions. Prepare the purchase around an approved life-safety layout and the exact equipment documentation, rather than selecting by appearance alone.

Prepare the site information

  1. Identify the exit route, sign viewing directions, mounting positions and required emergency illumination locations.
  2. Record supply, battery runtime, location rating and directional indicators for each equipment line.
  3. Keep the equipment listings and instructions available for the person reviewing the final layout.
  4. Include testing access, maintenance records and replacement-battery planning in the project handover.

Resolve the model-specific questions

What is the difference between an exit sign and emergency illumination?

Exit signs identify the route or exit. Emergency luminaires illuminate the egress path during a power interruption. A project may require both, depending on the approved life-safety layout.

How should battery runtime be selected?

Check the approved project requirements and the exact fixture battery and emergency runtime. Do not assume a normal LED fixture supplies emergency illumination.

How do I choose arrows and sign faces?

Match directional indicators, single- or double-face configuration and mounting orientation to the approved exit route and actual viewing directions.

Can an emergency fixture be installed outdoors?

Only when its listing, location rating and operating temperature suit the installation. Indoor equipment should not be assumed suitable for outdoor exposure.

What documentation should be retained?

Keep the model specifications, installation instructions, required listings and the building testing and maintenance records. Have the final layout reviewed against applicable local requirements.

Turn the plan into an order

Keep a schedule with one line per area and selected SKU. Include the variant, fixture count, pack count, mounting accessories and control components. Mark any unconfirmed requirement explicitly so it can be resolved before the order is finalized.

Retain the specification sheet and installation instructions for the selected model with the project records. If a listed setting, connection or accessory appears inconsistent, request clarification for that exact SKU rather than transferring information from a neighboring product.
